Here’s the outline for a workshop I usually do on Flickr called “FlickrFun.” Thought I’d re-post it after seeing David Jakes’ stuff (worth checking out!)
1. Presentation Outline
1.1 Innovation via Flickr
- Flickr’s Application Programming Interface (API) allows various applications to pull photos from Flickr for a variety of uses. My favorites include the following:
- Animoto – Take 13 photos
- VoiceThread – Allows you to pull images from Flickr into VoiceThread, then add audio and get audio/text comments from visitors.
- FlickrSlidr – Create a slide show out of your Flickr photos/images that you can drop into a web page or blog entry.
- Flickr Storm
1.2 FlickrTools
Working with Flickr Images
- AlbumMaker – Create photo albums that you can embed in web pages or blog entries.
- Big Huge Labs
- Captioner – Add caption to Flickr Images
- Flickr Graph
- Flickr Retrievr – Sketch a picture and see what matches.
- The Great FlickrTools Collection
- Crystal Create Embedded Flickr Objects
- Create PDFs from Flickr RSS Feeds
- Flickr Postcards – Make electronic postcards using images from Flickr
- Spelling with Flickr
- Flickrbooth for Mac – plugs-in to PhotoBooth, another neat Macintosh application.
- Many more FlickrTools
1.3 Tagging Your Flickr Images
1.4 Flickrize Your Desktop and/or Wallpaper
- DeskLickr for Mac – rotates Flickr images as your desktop background image.
Searching/Browsing Flickr Images for Copyright-Friendly Items
- Searching
- Browsing
2. Flickr Image Transfers
- Applications that make it easy to interact with Flickr:
- Flock Browser – A whole new web browser with built-in Flickr uploading and lot of extra Flickr features built right in.
- Flickr Uploadr – Enables you to easily upload photos into Flickr.
- FlickrBackup – Make a backup copy of all the photos you have in Flickr. I periodically back them up and then upload them to Google Picasa.
- Mobile Phone Tools
- Upload Photos via Email – If your camera-mobile-phone is set up to email, you can snap a photo with your camera phone then email the photo to your private email address. The photo will automatically be posted.
3. Curricular Applications of Flickr
- Digital Storytelling with Flickr
- Telling a Story in 5 Frames – Visual Storytelling
- View examples of visual storytelling
- Teaching Grammar
- Teaching with Flickr – Modal Verbs
- Present/Continuous/Progressive Tense
- Podcast about Flickr in the Classroom (Teachers Teaching Teachers) – “A picture is worth a thousand conversations.”
- PhotoJournalism
- ACRL Using Technology in teaching and learning:
- Documenting Lewis Elementary. This school used Flickr to store, publish, and share images recording its teaching and learning experience. Access: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lewiselementary/
- Exploring folksonomies and museums. This multi-museum, long-term project has studied user-generated tagging from a curatorial perspective. The site archives papers and other records of Steve’s work, which represent many breakthroughs and advances. Access: http://www.archimuse.com/research/steve.html and http://www.steve.museum/
- The Teaching Files: X-Rays. A resident physician uses Flickr images to teach reading X-ray photos of the human body. Access: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjagbayani/sets/895629/
