The Dark Side – Blog Ads

Eshewing my ban on advertising, I’ve jumped into the wide, wild world of blog advertising with my new blogger blog, a v3 of sorts for Around the Corner. My blog content continues to be available via Creative Commons ShareAlike-Attribution-Noncommercial Copyright. I have to admit that I felt this way:

If you think commercializing your blog is evil, immoral, unethical, uncool, lame, greedy, obnoxious, or anything along those lines, then don’t commercialize it.

Of course, according to Steve, I shouldn’t be using blogger…but I’ve heard others say that Blogger, because it’s owned by Google, gets more hits. Is that true? Who knows…I know I like it when my blog is widely read!

Will I be taken less seriously by folks reading it? You tell me. I suppose, though, that getting a check from GoogleAdSense ($100 for the first month) will feel like when I send an article into Education World or other publications…the money is nice, helps feed the family, but the joy of writing is ALL mine and continues to be the primary reward. Perhaps a few reminders about the writing here:

  • I write what I choose, no one tells me what to write about.
  • I write about what I’m learning and want to share, or remember.

As this offers an opportunity for learning something new–hence, it’s bloggable–some of the ad sources I’ve pursued include:

  1. GoogleAdSense – including a GoogleSearch in the sidebar, advertising panel, YouTube ads, and a banner across the bottom of the page.
  2. Paypal Donations – Accepting donations….

I’m a bit confused about how to integrate the ads in aside from what I’ve already done, but it’s a learning experience.
