As I consider the idea that most folks don’t have time to blog–shared in Dr. Scott McLeod’s 2008 Edublogosphere Survey–Michele Martin (The Bamboo Project) highlights Lee Kraus (Work Literacy) post about finding time to blog…and offers a solution–podcasting.
She encourages the use of Gcast and offers some possible uses, offering two tutorials. She goes on to ask:
What do you think? Does podcasting have a place in the blogging for learning toolkit? How do you see something like Gcast working as a blog learning tool?
This recommendation mirrors a conversation Wes Fryer (SpeedofCreativity.org) and I had last week as I drove back from the Meadows Principals Improvement Program Conference (MPIP2008), about a 4.5 hour drive.
The night before MPIP2008, I set up a Gcast account for the first time. Podcasting from my phone never grabbed me before because, to be frank, my phone stunk (smile). However, as phones improve, using Gcast for podcasting is pretty exciting.
In that conversation, Wes introduced another idea that had never occurred to me…having participants phone in their reflections on the workshop. I also suggested that this would be an easy way to record a podcast…run a 3-way call with Gcast as one of the extensions.
So, my response to Michele is YES, it does have a place, especially for those packed conferences where you can’t possibly get around to everyone to get their responses and reflections–I’m still envious of David Warlick’s approach where he runs from one person to another and hope to emulate that some day–Gcast will be a great learning, mass audio aggregation tool to use.

Miguel, I like the idea of using Gcast to have people phone in comments or reflections from a conference. I’m doing a training this week on using Gcast, so I’ll definitely have to suggest this to the participants. Thanks for extending my thinking on this!
