Podcasting at NECC 2009

In a recent email exchange, someone wrote (i’ve removed identifying info to protect the innocent):

We’ve been really pleased with the podcasting/fair use discussion so far. It’s been good to see the variety of opinions, and for the community to have an opportunity to engage with each other on the issue. It’s a tough issue…to tackle and…trying to be as transparent and inclusive as possible.

I couldn’t agree more with the way ISTE/NECC have pursued the conversations. Fortunately, I offered my limited feedback early on, so I can actually point to my posts as foundational rather than piling it higher and deeper (smile).

Here were my two contributions to the NECC 2009 Conversation about Podcasting:

I can honestly say, not a week has gone by since NECC 2008 that this question hasn’t come up–when will ISTE discuss this? Kudos for not waiting until next summer and handling it now with plenty of time!

First of all, I agree completely with the recommendation that presenters have the chance to indicate whether their work may be 1) recorded as audio/video podcasts and 2) shared under Creative Commons Non-Commercial-ShareAlike-Attribution Copyright. This enables all of us to share insomuch as we provide proper attribution, don’t profit financially from the work of others, and requires us to share with each other as the presenters have shared with us (almost the Golden Rule (smile)).

Second, while it may be too late for NECC 2009–unless when confirming if a presentation will actually be delivered, ISTE/NECC can request that CC SA-Attrib-NC be shared–it’s not too late to allow folks to record all free presentations (as opposed to paid workshops).

Third, any chance that bloggers/podcasters could be mobilized to store content in one central location, not unlike K-12OnlineConference? The idea here is that all of us podcasting potato-heads (affectionate) could contribute what we do to ISTE in the spirit of sharing. Of course, tagging makes this possible, too. But enlisting your volunteer membership to get things done can be powerful.

Finally, the membership in TCEA TEC-SIG voted unambiguously to support podcasting of presenters within guidelines not dissimilar to what ISTE used for NECC 2008. I honestly believe that podcasters want the opportunity to share fantastic ideas with others as they learn them within supportive boundaries that unite our efforts without diminishing our diversity.

and…

Claude, that makes sense. I appealed to Creative Commons due to its large fan base, however, GPDL and others are possible, too. When I consider that, I think of how Wikispaces.com makes the choice easy for folks in the settings.

Good point, Claude!

So, what is my response? Well, in spite of the conversation so far, I like the solution I proposed above. Notably absent from the conversation is Gary Stager.
