This post is just my notes I found in response to this request:
If you have more information on putting together Knoppix on a flashdrive for file rescue, please share.
I’d sent him my links to tutorials on installing UbuntuLinux on a Flash drive, but that wasn’t good enough (sigh). The gentleman in the comment above wants Knoppix since he anticipates using it for Windows file recovery. Years ago, I had my brief, obligatory fling with a Knoppix distro, and I can understand why the desire. So, here is my response…when I have some free time (ha), I may try it:
1- Recommended – Setting Up a USB-Knoppix from Windows with an 8-gig Flash Drive:

(Note: Instead of 8 gig flash drive, I installed to 1-gig successfully).2- Setting Up a USB-Knoppix after booting from Knoppix with a 1-gig Flash Drive:

Anyone reading this and lived to tell about it? Obviously, the second option is more attractive…I have plenty of 1-gigs lying around.
UPDATE 12/6/2008: I took advantage of the PenDrivelinux tutorial above for installing it on an 8-gig FlashDrive, but instead, I installed it on a 1-gig Kingston drive…it worked great! Kudos to the PenDriveLinux.com folks for another easy to follow tutorial. But what’s the benefit of Knoppix on a Flash Drive over UbuntuLinux? I still don’t get it. Knoppix is a bit kludgy albeit with a few more apps out of the starting gate.
