Ok, maybe that’s TOO much enthusiasm for Plurk (or maybe not…does it increase my karma? Wait, I don’t believe in karma). Yesterday, I switched from Twitter to Plurk, abandoning my 1000+ followers, leaving them to wander in the darkness of tweeting without me. Obviously, Twitter has yielded many benefits for me…but enough to stay with it as my one and only tweet/plurk type tool?
Twitter, Plurk, how many networks are we supposed to support and maintain? Can’t I just jump ship and then get back on board later? Of course, I can. Someone characterized the difference between Twitter and Plurk as the difference between a one-night stand and developing a relationship with people over time. While that can probably be sanitized to be more appropriate, it is a fascinating point…inaccurate, though. I developed a relationship with my Twitter network but it’s different on Plurk. Should you try Plurk? Well, I don’t know.
How do I know if this is just the beginning of a beautiful relationship, or what I think is the beginning but turns out to be a fling? Thankfully, when it comes to these tools, I’m a single guy…promiscuity isn’t a bad thing, is it (unless you count the Twitter Direct Message spam)? Anyways, one of the reasons I like Plurk is that I can follow the conversation…as you can see from my screenshot, response to my comment are grouped. Maybe it’s the similarity to a threaded discussion board, but more “quick” and spontaneous.
This already spending too much time…just go with the flow. A few Plurk tools I’ll be trying out include:
- Plurk Firefox Sidebar
- For UbuntuLinux, use Glurk client
- AdobeAir apps: PlurkAir or PlurkIt
Any other Plurk clients you would suggest? Of course, I have high standards, having used Tweetdeck and Twhirl for Twitter. Will there be a Plurk client that captures the beauty of the GUI? For now, I like PlurkIt!

I, too, think that Plurk is a more well rounded tool. Many educators are using both with tools that cross-post.How much is too much? This situation is much like the del.icio.us and Diigo thing a little while back. There’s something to be said about being first! The ‘build a better mousetrap’ saying isn’t always true.Do you worry that abandoning Twitter and jumping solely to Plurk will cut you out of the conversation of the majority on Twitter?

Welcome to Plurk Miguel – I think I've already welcomed you IN Plurk. I see Twitter as statements & Plurk as a conversation. I maintain both – although I Plurk more. I have different friends/followers in each & often cross post resources. How much is too much? How much can a person bear? Sometimes it is all too much & I've learned to hit the 'mark all as read' button & the sky hasn't fallen in!The interesting aspect of the Plurk group I'm in is that the members actively refer to it as their PLN. I'm undertaking doctoral studies & have decided to concentrate on the use of microblogging for professional learning. Stay tuned at my wiki: http://carolsdoctorate.pbwiki.com/

Great post and yes, Plurk is like a relationship. And just like a relationship, there are times when sometimes you’re tired of hearing the other person’s daily things. Which is why you can MUTE on Plurk! I think it’s the next step in evolving the microblogging world, readily utilizing both synchronous AND asynchronous networking. All are welcome!

Miguel welcome to Plurk. I am glad you have decided to join and participate in an excellent PLN option. I too have been on Twitter for some time. I can respect your connections with numerous folks on Twitter but the threads will grow on you. Those reading this post that are on Twitter and want to try out Plurk consider using Twitbin as a FF3 sidebar and have Plurk in the main window. In all honesty I have developed a strong connection with my fellow Plurkers as a result of the threaded discussions and the feeling of being a “family”.
