Real Test of Leadership

I love this quote Steve Poling (Leadertalk.org) introduced me to:

The real test of exemplary leadership is not making yourself an irreplaceable icon but developing a deep, talented bench who, when their turn comes, can unite a company and unleash creativity into their own way.
–Warren Bennis

Problem is, I want to unleash their creativity BEFORE I leave. How can I enable my team to better unleash that creativity?

In Emotional Intelligence, this 3-step approach is outlined:

  1. Bring bad habits into awareness.
  2. Consciously practice a better way.
  3. Rehearse that new behavior at every opportunity until it becomes automatic–that is, until mastery has occurred at the level of implicit learning.

Questions for growth of my own:

  • What behaviors am I engaging in that restrain creativity among my staff?
  • How can I model creativity while encouraging it in others?
  • Can I do that at the same time I am also custodian for a limited budget? and does budget really have anything to do with it?

What questions does Warren Bennis’ quote bring to your mind about your own leadership or work in K-12 schools?
