Some time ago, I shared my thoughts regarding the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) needing a new approach. I outlined key roles for the new Executive Director position in that blog entry. Here’s my favorite quote–aside from the list of must-dos and recommendations–from that blog entry, probably because it speaks to my own passion for an organization that has nurtured me since I was in my mid-20s:
I want TCEA to be the BEST organization possible, to empower its members to achieve what they didn’t think they could do alone. Clay Shirky points out that the membership can now organize without all the cost of an organization. And, while that’s true now with the new technologies available to us, TCEA should be our rallying point, a standard that we can all carry as we advocate for the transformative power of technology in teaching, learning and leadership.
When a new Executive Director is chosen at the end of the interim period–probably after Convention in February–I hope that the new Board chooses a leader that will challenge them, push them to re-align with their membership, that will work to amplify the voices of teachers, librarians, leaders in Texas schools, to a crescendo that even the Texas legislature will hear.
TCEA–A vibrant community that uses technology to unite our passionate efforts to improve K-16 teaching, learning and leading without diminishing our diversity.
I’m glad to report that the TCEA is now seeking an Executive Director.
Aside: To whomever TCEA chooses to fill that spot, I want you to know that if you need someone to contribute blog posts, serve as a blog editor/contributor, please feel free to let me know!
Not unlike our new U.S. President, the TCEA Executive Director will have many challenges, chief among them a need to revitalize the Membership, find ways to be open and transparent, and make the work of the Board and the Organization understandable in ways that haven’t been attempted before at TCEA. Hiring new staff, setting that new team in place is also going to be a challenge. Ultimately, though, carrying out the will of the TCEA Board will be critical.
And, I hope that each TCEA member will keep this in mind…How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world (Anne Frank).
