John Rice shared this awesome
list of 51 essential programs for a freeware only PC. It’s an
awesome list because it mentions a few programs I’d never heard of
(smile) and the only criticism is that you have to click your way
through several screens to get to the download links…that aside, it’s
a nice list worth checking out. One point–he includes 4 easy download
"packs" of all the software. Pretty nice!

Some of my favorites off that list that I didn’t know about include the
following:

1. Ant Movie Catalog – lets you manage movie libraries
2. Any Audio Converter – converts audio files and can extract audio from
   video
3. Combined Community Codec Pack – includes video codecs.
4. CodecInstaller – analyzes video/audio files, and then helps you
   install the codecs that you need.
5. Exact Audio Copy – lets you rip CD/DVD audio tracks.
6. FontNetInstaller – lets you search websites with fonts from within the
   program itself.
7. GOM Player – video player
8. PCInspector File Recovery
9. Starburn CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray disc burning
10. SuperAntiSpyware
11. Sweep RAM
12. TUGzip

You can download the files above from
this site…and tons more there. BTW, be careful while installing
some of the programs…some will offer the option to install Yahoo or
Google toolbars. You can just decline those options and it installs
without problems.
