What CMS to Choose

Source: How to Choose Between Joomla, Drupal, and WordPress

Some districts are finding themselves having to choose between the best content management systems for the job. The problem is that ease of use is highly prized in education. On the other end of the balance is what needs to be done.

While I worked to set in place Joomla as the content management system for several school districts, a part of me always hearkened after the simplicity and power of WordPress. And, FunnyMonkey dude has made me want to seriously consider Drupal. The problem is, I don’t like Joomla, and Drupal, even less. Even while a part of me acknowledges the necessity of content management, these behemoths of CMS are just not easy to use. So, what remains…Wordpress.

I’ve argued these points with my team, and they invariably push me back to Joomla. “Instead of 250 different Joomla installations, why couldn’t we have one?” (so goes the argument for Drupal). Or if we must have 250 sites, then let’s do WordPress…it’s easier to maintain, upgrade, etc. In the end, though, we support what we know and that’s Joomla. No one, though, wants to embrace WordPress and set it up for thousands of users. That’s a job better left to others (e.g. Edublogs.org).

And, I’m convinced that if Moodle had content management potential, Moodle would be the tool of choice. What to do in the midst of all these wonderful tools?

So, for now, my team and I have chosen Joomla…but WordPress (View Examples) is calling to me, especially when I see surveys like these.
