Moodle Mutts – UNITE!

Source: Wikipedia

MoodleMutt – A colloquial term for Moodle users who learn how to use Moodle from a variety of sources, not the official Moodle outlets; can be perjorative, neutral, or positive, depending on the context.

“MoodleMutt” may not be a real term, but I’m going to use it anyways. As I’ve ventured out learning Moodle and really trying to get a better handle on it, I’ve found myself learning from a variety of sources…books, web sites, my own experience, and the generosity of others in Twitter. I get a little nervous when people start saying, “Gee, Miguel’s an expert on Moodle” (I even received an invite to keynote a MoodleMoot, although my keynote fee must have scared the group away!).

Blogging enables one to learn and share. In that spirit, I just ran across a quote at a blog I just discovered, Kicking Sand.

“When you work in any creative industry where you are forced to constantly output it is crucial to have constant input.”

This quote is so relevant for educators…reflective blogging reminds us of that.

In truth, I’m just trying to get a handle on Moodle and its use in K-12. A lot of the work has involved administering Moodle. There is a lot I have to learn, and “MoodleMutt” describes me just fine. In fact, what I’d like to do is write a case study on different Moodle uses in K-12 classroom. But the truth is, I don’t have time to do that.

So, here’s an invite to craft your own MoodleMutt story and share it via your blog or a wiki somewhere, or throw it in the comments section for the rest of us to read.

And, I’d like to invite other MoodleMutts to join me at this event…I promise, I’ll listen to how you are using Moodle in your classroom, and respond to any questions you might have that I might know the response to.

On March 14th at 12pm EST Miguel Guhlin will lead a presentation for Classroom 2.0 Live, a great resource for teachers looking to learn more about tech-ed through live online sessions through Elluminate. These weekly webinars are organized by the CR2.0 volunteers and Steve Hargadon.

Miguel is the owner of Around the Corner, a great education technology blog that I follow regularly. He’s been focusing a lot on Moodle lately and has some great resources for school Moodle administrators about adding new modules, setting up Moodles and lots of tutorial information. Do check it out.

On 3/14 though he’ll be highlighting Moodle through CR2.0 which should be a great way to learn about the popular open source Learning Management System from a well known blogger/educator.

Thanks to GlobalClassroom folks for the write-up and reminder!

  1. Quite obviously my pleasure to provide the write up. Unfortunately I’m going to be in the most rural part of NH on Saturday and I’m going to miss it! I’m so bummed. I hope you’ll post a link to the transcript/recording.
