My raw notes on TxDLA sessions attended appear online. Since this is my first visit to the conference, I have to confess to the following disappointments:
- Lack of adequate Internet for the conference except for extremely slow wireless at the registration desk and Internet Cafe. It was terrible. Just not acceptable for the Convention Center to not have wireless.
- Opening Session speaker on Tuesday was not as engaging as hoped.
- Individual workshops were scattered and only a few got rave reviews. Some folks pretty much walked out of monotone sessions that put them to sleep. I was hoping for more practitioner sessions. Need a different format that allows audience to engage more with presenter…with no Internet, forget about backchannels, etc.
- Big convention center, not that many participants, so it felt deserted. Needed to pack into one side of the convention center to enhance the “energy” of participants.
Those disappointments aside, there were some sessions that did catch my eye and were worth attending! The organizers were running around working and doing their best. Thanks to them for making the conference possible and their persistence in the face of adversity!
My favorite story about persistence in the face of adversity was that at one of the sessions, everything DID NOT work. The digital projector, the wired Internet connection, everything halted progress for a good 20 minutes. However, when it was manageable, the presenters were finally able to stand up and do an awesome job.
