Virtual Worlds Almanac

Although I’d asked Yann to write a blog entry, I didn’t get a response…so, here’s her email to me sharing the site:

I am Yann Jouitteau, working for the Federation of American Scientist, in the Learning Technologies Department. Our goal is to find ways to use technologies to improve how people teach and learn, and promote their use in the USA.

In this framework, I am developing a wiki-like website (http://vworld.fas.org), referencing virtual worlds that can be used for teaching purpose. The website has three main goals:

(1) The most important is to allow teacher to learn about the multiple educational virtual worlds currently available, and how they can be used to strengthen their existing curriculum. It is also a place for them to share their knowledge about the virtual worlds they use, how they use it and if they would advise other teachers to do so. To this end we try to provide customised search tools tailored to the needs of teachers and educators.

(2) We would like to grow the wiki into a place for developers to inform the teachers about their products, explain how they can be used in plain English, and get feedbacks from educational professionals.

(3) Finally, this wiki is also a tool to advocate the use of new technologies in Education, and prove to the congress and government agencies that these technologies are efficient, and educators are ready to use them.

As I had the opportunity to read on your blog, you are a strong supporter of the new technologies in learning environment. I would be delighted to have some advice on how to advertise this wiki. If you know communities of professor that I could contact, or any person that can be interested by this wiki, I will be ready to contact them. If you have found yourself some interesting virtual worlds, or use one of them, feel free to add it on this wiki, I will be very happy to have some feedbacks on how to improve it and make the interface more intuitive.

I’m still exploring Yann’s site and hope to learn more in the future.
