Keynote Presentation: Digital Learners, Empowered Learners – Starting the Learning Revolution
(45 minutes)
Facilitator: Miguel Guhlin

New technologies enable our children–and their educators–to learn from a variety of sources that offer their content for free. How are schools coping with decentralized education model that frees learners from traditional student and teacher roles, facilitates collaborative curriculum development, and empowers every learner to be a citizen-journalist? This keynote will explore some of those new technologies that you can use to be empowered, no matter your rank in the hierarchy.

Teacher Strand – Learning the Moodle Mambo: Creating Online Learning Environments for K-12 Learners
(3 hours)
Facilitator: Miguel Guhlin

In this introductory course to facilitating online learning, Honey Grove ISD teachers will 1) learn the nuts and bolts of Moodle, an online course management system; 2) Learn how to engage students with discussions, games, quizzes, movies and podcasts; 3) Use Moodle to put lessons online and grade them from anywhere, anytime; 4) Turn Moodle into your very own one-stop shopping spot for your lessons.

This session is geared towards educators who are not familiar with online learning at all but are comfortable working with email, browsing the Internet, emailing word processor/slide show presentations to each other and others.

Software/Web Site Access Requirements: HotPotatoes (http://www.halfbakedsoftware.com), Firefox 3.x, Office Suite, Access to Slideshare.net.

Geek Strand – Moodle Habitudes: Constructing and Managing Online Learning Environments (3 hours)

Facilitator: Miguel Guhlin

In this Bring Your Own Computer course geared for those responsible for administering a Moodle server, or for those interested in administering, participants will learn how to 1) Set up their own computer as a server; 2) Install Moodle; 3) Install PHPMyAdmin for Moodle MySQL Table Optimization and data import; and 4) Apply tips and tricks discovered by the author of Moodle Habitudes (available online at
http://snipurl.com/moodlehabitudes ). Other practical tips too numerous to list here will also be shared.

Geek Strand – Backing Up/Restoring Your Hard Drive with System Rescue CD
(1 hour)

Facilitator: Miguel Guhlin

This hands-on workshop guides you through the ins and outs of backing up and restoring your Windows or GNU/Linux computer using the freely available System Rescue CD and an external USB 120gig or greater hard drive. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop they want to backup/restore (please back up all your data FIRST), an external USB 120gig or greater drive with them.

Leadership Strand – 3 Essential Technology Tools for Campus Administrators
(1 hour)

Facilitator: Miguel Guhlin

This hands-on workshop guides campus leaders in these 3 areas:

  1. Assessing Technology Implementation in Campus Classrooms
  2. Building Interactivity into Your SlideShow Presentations
  3. Surveys, Forms, and Spreadsheets – Data Collection Made Easy.

Participants will leave with specific ideas and tools they can use.
