Finding Balance

Dick Westley writes, there are two Adams in the Bible, and these perspectives shape our entire culture and civilization. They reflect the divided state always at war. He describes these motives in this way:

…it has always been possible to discern in human life two contradictory motives or urges: 1) The urge to succeed, to dominate, to be special, and to stand out from the crowd; 2) and the urge to escape isolation, to avoid being thrust back on one’s own energies alone, to merge with others in a redemptive communion of some sort.

We see the different faces of humanity in each of these situations. Whether we term them “scientist” or “teacher,” “strict father” or “nurturing parent,” or “Adam/Eve 1” or “Adam/Eve 2,” the fact remains that two parts of ourselves are in contradiction.
