Moodle Requests and Appropriate Use Online Course

Source: http://conwyfed.llandrillo.ac.uk/file.php/1/moodle_powered.png

A few days ago, I tweeted a request to Moodle education users to share their “Moodle Appropriate Use” guidelines. Unfortunately, while I did receive a few retweets, 2-3 remarks regarding how “limiting” guidelines could be, I received few actual responses (one response from a Texas district appears below!). I was surprised by this because Moodles have been around in education for years…surely, more than a few implementers of Moodle have had to come up with appropriate use?

Then, it occurred to me that my request was too general. This isn’t an acceptable use policy just for Moodle. Rather, it provides some ideas on how Moodle might be used appropriately–not acceptable use appropriate, but ideally–in schools. It’s designed as an orientation online course.

This all came about because Moodle courses are now “taking off” in my teaching and learning situation…we need a way to help people understand how Moodle can/should be used (as opposed to using a blog or wiki).

Right now, I have a Moodle Request Form–remember, we have a few thousand teachers, hundred or so principals, support staff, departments–online that people can complete to request a Moodle. Below is the form used…how do you handle this in your District?

Request a Moodle Course for Your Virtual Learning Situation

Moodle is a fantastic tool to use to facilitate online learning and reflection. Use this short form to request setup of a Moodle course for your classroom, department, or workshop.

Request for Moodle Course Setup

Thank you for your interest in facilitating online learning for either K-12 or adult learners with Moodle. Moodle is a course management system that is designed to enable you to create and facilitate a virtual learning environment (a.k.a. classroom). After completing your request below, a Moodle course will be setup for you to use. Please be aware of the following caveats:

  • While a teacher may have an unlimited number of courses, one course can be used with multiple groups/classes of students if the content is the same. A team of teachers (grade level or department) may also collaborate on a Moodle course for their use.
  • Campuses and/or departments may request unlimited number of courses. If you would like your own Moodle area–which allows you to manage your own site–a representative of the campus/department must complete an Online Moodle Appropriate Use Course (1 hour) within 2 weeks of submitting this form. Failure to complete this course will result in the suspension of your moodle. You may register for the Moodle Appropriate Use Course via [removed]
  • The originator of the request has administrative rights for their course only.
  • Since Moodle is a powerful online learning tool, you are encouraged to register for professional learning in how to use it to its full potential to enhance your virtual learning environment. Classes are available online via ePath at http://itls.saisd.net/epath.

If launching Moodle campus-wide for every teacher–at the request of a principal–please be aware that professional learning is required.

  1. Complete this form.
  2. Expect a follow up contact from Instructional Technology & Learning Services team members.

Please note that all requests are time/date-stamped automatically. Thank you for your request! We’re delighted that you’ll be using Moodle to enhance virtual learning in the Generic ISD!

  1. Please enter your name (this is the primary contact for this request).
  2. Please enter your GISD email address. Be sure to include the complete email address, such as “mguhlin@gisd.net”
  3. Please enter your work phone number.
  4. Please choose whether this is a campus or district level professional learning request.
  5. Please enter the name of your campus/department below.
  6. Did you obtain your campus principal’s or supervisor’s approval before initiating this process?
  7. Please indicate which of the ONLINE courses below–IF ANY–you have attended.
  8. What will this Moodle Course be used for?
  9. Is there anything else you would like to share with us? Perhaps, you teach different courses (e.g. Geometry, Algebra) and need a separate course for each?

What other questions would/do you ask on your Moodle Request Form?

Update 10/11/2009: Moodle Access Rules removed at copyright holder’s request.

  1. It's great to see one of our Moodle community schools listed here. Note that some of the language used in their agreement is just echoing what we think is a base-level AUP for using our site (which is free to register, free for teachers to create courses). All users agree to this (http://www.globalclassroom.us/moodle/user/policy.php) the first time they login but any school district that has their courses/students/online presence through our site is urged to go above and beyond our AUP to reflect their own local AUP which we yield to. In the past, any cases of misuse have been addressed collaboratively with the local district. We're really happy how it's worked out.
