VSFTP on UbuntuLinux

It seems like an eternity ago, but it was actually just yesterday that I found myself at home mid-day for an urgent matter and still working (once things calmed down). The question was, “What FTP Server should you setup on Red Hat Linux?” It was a question I really didn’t have a clue to, but then I decided to Google it, and like most searches these days, the answer was right there.

vsftpd is a GPL licensed FTP server for UNIX systems, including Linux. It is secure and extremely fast. It is stable. Don’t take my word for it, though. Below, we will see evidence supporting all three assertions. We will also see a list of a few important sites which are happily using vsftpd. This demonstrates vsftpd is a mature and trusted solution.

The solution I ran across was VSFTP, which works on Red Hat Linux as well as UbuntuLinux. You can see the options. It was pretty easy to install on UbuntuLinux (sudo apt-get install vsftp) and I had it up and going…after I googled the start command! How funny I couldn’t figure out how to START the VSFTP Server:

On UbuntuLinux:
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd stop
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd start

On Red Hat Linux:
Check out this guide….

Anyways, it works great on my dual boot Macbook running Fluxbuntu (Fluxbox GUI on Ubuntu)! Apparently, it also does LDAP authentication….
