Moodle and Wikis – Phone Support

One of the challenges in having different systems in a school district involves answering the question, “How do I know which tool to use, Moodle or Wiki? What do I start with?” Any district that launches blogs, wikis and Moodles will encounter the problem if the focus is on the use of the technology rather than the instructional purpose.

This diagram doesn’t get at the instructional purpose, but it is a first step at separating out the ideas. If you know of better ways of achieving that purpose, let me know!

Constructive criticism is definitely invited! This is a work in progress. Original document (in OpenOffice format) can also be made available for download.

  1. This is important work you're up to Miguel, and I think you've just scratched the surface of a discussion that will be continuing for some time. It should probably be at least a three column comparison chart to include blogs. But as I write that, I think that it should also include a comparison to Facebook, Twitter, and Google Apps – kinda like the product comparison charts on Amazon and other product vending sites. This kind of comparison would be a useful resource for learners of any of the above tools to refer to as they become more familiar with each. And, of course, updating the comparison chart would be almost a full time job for somebody since all of the above tools are constantly adding features to be more like the others.

  3. @Dan I agree…a year ago, this would have been a 3column chart but we are phasing out blogs for teachers in favor of wikis. As to Facebook, Twitter and Gapps, those are all banned or frowned upon by upper admin. In regards to constantly maintaining a chart, we'd pretty much have to wikify it, right?
