Someone recently asked me, “You know how singers publish their songs as music videos on YouTube?” 

“Yes,” I replied…since I’m a complete ignoramus when it comes to music, singers, etc., I asked, “Why?”

<“How do you get the music without the video? Make it into an MP3 sound file?” 

The easiest approach is to download the FLV video version of the music video and then strip out the audio and save it to MP3. Of course, there are approaches that allow you to go straight from YouTube video on the Web to an MP3 file you can save on your computer…we’ll start with those approaches first:

• Use Media-Converter, a web-based service that not allows you to convert video to audio, but you can actually browse YouTube and add items to the list to be converted. Pretty awesome!
• Try Dirpy.com – Use Dirpy to convert your favorite YouTube videos to mp3s!
• Try Video2Mp3.com – “Video2mp3 is a free YouTube, MyVideo, Clipfish, Sevenload, Dailymotion, MySpace to MP3 Converter and allows you to convert and download a video to MP3 file online. This service is fast, free, and requires no signup. All you need is a Video URL, and our software will transfer the video to our server, extract the MP3, and give you a link to download the audio file. “
• Use alternate web-based services like Zamzar.com/url or FetchMP3.com to save audio directly from an online YouTube video to MP3 file on your computer. FetchMP3.com even provides a Firefox add-on you can install. To be honest, I like Zamzar.com‘s approach because they’ll email you when the conversion is done and provide a download link.

• Another possibility is YouTube to MP3 Converter. From their web site: …the only thing you need is a YouTube URL. We will start to convert the audiotrack of your videofile to mp3 as soon as you have submitted it and you will be able to download it.
