Coaching Adolescent Writers Throughout the Writing Process

FREE for 6th-12th grade WRITING TEACHERS 

Writing Next says the study of models (mentor texts), the writing process, inquiry activities, collaborative writing, and sentence combining are all effective ways to teach adolescent writers.  Writing teachers and authors, Jeff Anderson and Kelly Gallagher, believe that an essential part of our role as teachers is to be coaches; encouraging, nudging, advising on the side while the kids are actively engaged in writing and thinking. To get students ready for the classroom–or the world–we have to strategically sequence strategies that actively involve students from start to finish: prewriting, drafting, sharing and responding, revising, and editing. Come see how this shift from acting as writing teachers to becoming writing coaches has helped Jeff and Kelly elevate student writers.
