I’ve added video to GoogleDocs before, but I was pleased to read the following:
Once you’ve uploaded your video to Google Docs, you can watch it with the Google Docs video player. Simply click the file from your Documents List, and the player opens in a new page.
Files that you can play
Uploaded video files can be up to 1 GB. These are the most common video formats that you can upload and play:
- WebM files (Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codec)
- .MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files – (h264 and mpeg4 video codecs and AAC audio codec)
- .AVI (many cameras use this format – typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM)
- .MPEGPS (MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio)
- .WMV
My only regret? I wish this had been available last week…one of my portable hard drives crashed with videos of my Dad. I’ve been afraid to look and see if I had double-backed it up to other external drives. Now, I intend to upload my videos to GoogleDocs (I have 80+gigs) for safe storage in the cloud.
You can convert to WebM using the free, cross-platform Miro Video Converter.WebM, the new video format that works well with HTML5 and is free, open source and supported by lots of folks, including Google and Mozilla. More importantly, new high-res videos are being encoded to WebM by YouTube and work well with HTML5.
