Writing(and Rewriting for College2011 Summer Open Institute on College and Career Readiness in WritingPresented by the San Antonio Writing Project June 13-17, 9:00-3:30
With the new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) test, Texas educators face a more rigorous assessment landscape aligned with the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS). What does this new alignment of standards and assessment toward college readiness mean for English teachers? This Institute proposes to bring college, high school, and middle school teachers together, following the National Writing Project’s principles of “teachers teaching teachers,” to talk about college readiness in the area of writing.
At this institute participants will engage in multiple activities to learn more about the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards and their implications on curriculum and assessment. These activities include:
 *   reading and discussing selections from the NCTE text What is College-Level Writing? edited by Patrick Sullivan (as well as other readings). *   visiting college composition classrooms at San Antonio College and talking with faculty from other disciplines about writing assignments and expectations in their classes *   experiencing teaching demonstrations of successful writing lessons from San Antonio Writing Project Teacher Consultants *   hearing a special presentation on college readiness from a University Writing Program Administrator. *   developing a writing lesson geared toward college readiness that participants could use in their classroom *   focusing, in particular, on revision and how to promote rewriting with your students (writing skills identified in particular in the TEKS-CCRS alignment as important for college readiness)
This workshop will be SAWP’s fourth summer to offer an open institute on college-readiness in writing supported by ESC Region 20 in collaboration with UTSA and Alamo Colleges. This workshop is free for participants.
