FFMPEG Video Conversion Example

Earlier today, I ran across some old video clips featuring the Curriculum Using Technology (CUT) Institute, an initiative Jim Baldoni and I had thought up when we worked at the Education Service Center, Region 20. It’s amazing how little the rhetoric has changed in the intervening years!

One of the challenges involved converting the videos so that they would fit under the 25 meg limit for upload to Box.net. Having only an old Dell Dimension 3000 running LubuntuLinux, I did a quick google search and turned up these possible options:

Maximum Quality / Maximum File Size / Best Audio
ffmpeg -i input.mov -ar 22050 -qscale .1 output.flv 

Medium Quality / Medium File Size / Medium Audio
ffmpeg -i input.mov -ar 22050 -ab 96k -qscale 2 output.flv 

Low Quality / Low File Size / Medium Audio
ffmpeg -i input.mov -ar 22050 -ab 96k -qscale 4 output.flv

Here’s the code I used that worked well (or so I think):

ffmpeg -i Clip*1 -ar 22050 -ab 96k -qscale 6 cut1.flv

Note: Items in boldface are the filenames of the input video file and output video file, respectively.
