Buying a new iPad can be nerve-wracking, right? A colleague of mine is interested in buying one of the new 3rd generation iPads, but is unsure of what to buy. Here is her question:

I want to get a new iPad. Do you think 16 GB is enough or do I need 32 GB?

The obvious answer is, buy the one with the most storage you can afford…32gb or 64gb. But is the obvious answer, the right one?

The tough part of the choice is that you cannot upgrade your memory once you buy the device. This means that if you buy a 16 GB model and later realize you need the 32 GB, rather than paying the $100 difference, you will end up paying for a whole new iPad. Of course, you can always sell your used one to an iPad-hungry buyer, but you aren’t likely to make up your whole investment.

In favor of keeping your initial investment low, the 16 GB may be plenty for casual users. If you need your iPad to store and show photos, allow you to work, and maybe watch a few movies or TV shows on the go, the lowest memory model will serve you just fine.

What if you could get away with buying a 16gig WiFi iPad and then just get an external WiFi storage device later (e.g. Seagate’s solution or G-Technology) at $200, if it turns out you need it? Although not as elegant a solution, it does allow you go buy a device now, then add to it later…but you still end up paying the money. If the external storage solutions were $50-$100, that would be one thing. 


Personally, I’d still recommend with going the largest storage on the iPad you can…even if you have to save up for it. After all, if you are going to load it up with videos and music, you’ll need all the room you can get, right?

  2. Thanks, Miguel! You confirmed my plan to purchase the largest memory available on the new iPad3. I've always been worried about regretting a lower memory choice.
