RSS Magic – Content for All

Session Description: Ever wondered how to pull in content from blogs, news sources, web searches into a convenient bundle of content you can share as a subscribable link (RSS feed) or embed in a web page? This session will explore the how-to of RSS Magic with Google Reader RSS Bundles. You can use Google Reader RSS Bundles to “bundle” content available as RSS from various sources and put them in one convenient, easy-to-share package.

Wow, time has sure passed quickly! Tomorrow (October 27th), I’ll be presenting on the topic of RSS Magic at the GoogleApps Summit in TCEA Area 20. This is a free conference and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to facilitate a student panel and present on an obscure subject, Real Simple Syndication (RSS). 😉

    2. Where’s your virtual space?
    3. Do you know how to add content to it?
  2. Finding RSS Feeds
    1. You can get RSS feeds from almost anywhere. Here are a few places.
    2. If you use a blog, there’s an RSS feed.
    3. If you use Diigo or Delicious, there’s an RSS feed!
    4. If you use Evernote, there’s an RSS feed!! (view tutorial)
    5. If you use Pinterest.com, there’s an RSS feed!!! (view tutorial)
  3. Making and Embedding RSS Feeds for Web Sites/Content
    1. Making RSS – If you have content online, and want to make an RSS feed, you can use a variety of tools to get the job done.
      1. Diigo
      2. Evernote
      3. Google Reader can create RSS feeds for web sites (view this tutorial)
    2. Embedding RSS – 
      1. Google Blogs/Wikis (a.k.a. Sites) have RSS gadgets that allow you to embed RSS feeds
      2. Use a tool like MagicRSS to take existing RSS feeds and drop them into a static web page (e.g. traditional web page, not a blog or content management system).
  4. Blending/Bundling RSS Feeds
    1. Google RSS Bundles
      1. Google RSS Bundles is a tool that allows you to subscribe to your favorite RSS feeds using Google Reader, then “bundle” those RSS feeds for embedding elsewhere. 
      2. Create your Google RSS Bundle then explore the options
    2. Use RSSMix.com (view tutorial, which also includes some other tools)
