A Cool Balm – A Leader’s Positive Thinking

I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. -Jer 29:11

I read this quote from Jeremiah–via Twitter, what a surprise because I didn’t have to go poring through Scripture–and it immediately struck me. No, not only because that’s God’s perspective as expressed in the Bible.

Now before you start wondering, “Wait, Miguel has become a religious blogger and i wanted to read him for edleadership or edtech!” or whatever you’re here for, I love Jeremiah’s wording here because it reflects the perspective I sincerely believe we need to foster among school leadership.

As an administrator in public schools, there can be nothing more profound to say to my team, “I know the thoughts I think toward you, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” That doesn’t mean that you won’t find yourself in trouble because of your own human frailties and, well, cussedness that each of us has.

When I hear words like this, it is like a cool balm–but internally applied–on my soul. As an educator, I can think of nothing more positive to believe about my colleagues that “I think…to give you a future and a hope.”

Who couldn’t say “Amen!” to that?
