Scribbled Treasures

Cleaning my home office (obligatory during the holidays) has unearthed a few of my old notebooks. These little leather bound (fake leather, no doubt) journals contain my work notes over the years. As I flip the pages, I notice that each has a few bits of wonderful wisdom tucked away.

Among the scribbled treasures are prayers, book notes, and more. For example, have you read this prayer?
Prayer of St. Patrick
Christ be with me, Christ before me
Christ behind me, Christ within me
Christ beneath me, Christ above me
Christ on my right, Christ on my left
Christ where I lie, Christ where I sit,
Christ where I arise, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ every eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me.
Cool, huh? Of course, it’s not all religious. There’s a few tidbits about other things, too.

“Most kids experience school as a series of tasks, dittos, assignments, tests–things that are administered to them. Writing workshop turns the table and puts kids in charge…engage in responsive teaching rather than relying on preset lesson plans.”

While teachers may determine what gets taught, only the student can decide what will be learned.
I regret I don’t have the source for those quotes. There’s a bit more to each.
Stephen Covey even found his way into one journal:

The research shows that companies who win in tough times have simple goals repeatedly revisited, together with clear targets and strong follow-through, including the measure of results.

This next quote (Covey again) is gold:

We need to ask ourselves whether times like these require getting the most things done, or a sharp focus on getting the most important thing done. – Vireet Nayar as cited by Covey

So, what’s your sharp focus?
