I spent most of an hour or so going through the ancillary resources to a new book I’m reading, or listening to, Culturally Responsive Teaching for Multilingual Learners (2022). Here are my notes on the audio version of the book. Lots of great resources (a Google search will reveal them to you) come with the book. What I like about it is that it is almost 8 hours, so won’t take forever to listen to. What’s more, it focuses on multilingual learners, which is a nice break.

- The illusion of inclusion: With a push for more multicultural books and resources, the field of education has evolved.
- Culture is often left out of the equation when improving equity for multilingual learners, even though they want to start with strengths and assets.
- With a workforce that is primarily white, monolingual, ML students lose out on affirmation of their culture. That’s why this book matters.
- Be ready to listen, take risks, and sit with the discomfort that this may bring.
- The authors refer to all the horror of 2020, protests against systemic racism, and naming many of those Blacks killed.
- The systemic racism and examples speak to the problem of equity.
- Begin with humility. As educators, we can’t deny the responsibility of engaging in equity and anti-racism work.
Ok, I’m stopping here. I should have bought this book. Listening via audio has been exhausting.
