Flipboard Adds Mastodon Support

A long-time user of Flipboard, a content curation tool that formats multiple sources of news and information into digital magazines, I had been hoping for the news announced. That news?

Are you on Mastodon or interested in learning more about the Fediverse? You’re in luck.
We’ve just made it easy to connect your Mastodon account to Flipboard on iOS, letting you interact with your Mastodon timelines in beautiful Flipboard fashion.
This includes replying, favoriting and boosting directly to Mastodon from Flipboard, and flipping Mastodon posts into your Flipboard Magazines.

I immediately added my education Mastodon account (https://mastodon.education/@mguhlin) to my Flipboard account. Soon enough, I was able to view Mastodon posts (a.k.a. toots) in my Flipboard, cheek and jowl with other information sources. What joy!

Here’s one of my posts:

Even more fun, I was able to read and reply to others, using Flipboard as my client to read and write posts. What I love is how easy it was. I also like how easy it is to see others posts, cutting down on the timeline that can distract:

Flipboard has done a nice job with this. I can only hope for even more integration, and support for MORE accounts (I have two Mastodon accounts that I would love to blend into Flipboard, not just the one I have now).

Getting Started

Here’s how to get started:

Be among the first to try out this new integration and join us in a federated future. Here’s how in three easy steps:

  1. Log into your Flipboard account on your iPhone or iPad and make sure you’ve updated the app to v4.2.164.
  2. Select the Following tab.
  3. Tap on “Accounts” and select “Mastodon” under “Add an account.”
Once you have your Mastodon account authorized in Flipboard, you can decide what you want to see:

This makes Flipboard a nice client for Mastodon. It lacks the features of other dedicated apps, but it makes browsing easy to do, and that’s really all many want to do. Of course, you CAN reply or respond.
