Are AI Benefits Worth the Water Usage?

This was an interesting tidbit of info to balance the benefits of AI against:
ChatGPT uses an estimated 500ml of water for every five to 50 prompts. The estimate is from researchers at the University of California based on YOY increase in Microsoft’s (34%) and Google’s (20%) water usage. The water usage is tied to the cooling cost of data centers for training and running ChatGPT. Microsoft disclosed that its global water consumption spiked 34% from 2021 to 2022 (to nearly 1.7 billion gallons, or more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools)
Of course, it’s all worth it if we can get this benefit, right? Robot Janitor for $1000 a month to help clean stuff.
Maybe what we’re aiming for with AI is this…
