Isn’t it crazy when employers seek to enforce work habits of employees with…surveillance? Where’s the trust?

“TikTok employees in the United States expressed frustration and dismay this week after the company introduced a tool for tracking office attendance and threatened disciplinary action for failing to comply with new in-person mandates, in an unusual effort to get workers back into the office with custom data-collection technology.” (Source: New York Times via ResearchBuzz)

But then imagine how awful this is in K-12 education settings where video surveillance is increasing. Is it really to protect against active shooters? It didn’t seem to do victims of most recent mass school shootings any good…people still ended up dead. I’m not sure providing evidence AFTER people died is really considered effective except for the prosecution of the case (if that person survives).
In my school district, extra video cameras were installed to watch technology department staff. The reasoning? Well, there was some vague idea that it would help them monitor the work habits of staff. Staff were supposed to work harder, be held accountable more. But it had the opposite effect on culture.

there’s mounting evidence that electronic surveillance can, in some cases, do more harm than good. Workers chafe against it, and surveillance can lead to stress, cause employees to quit and even make workers do their job worse – on purpose. (source)

AI-Powered Video Surveillance

Now that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is in the picture, what will we see with AI-powered video surveillance? It all sounds good…
Video analytics is the process of utilizing AI software and deep learning algorithms to analyze network video from security cameras in real time. This video content analysis provides security systems with many powerful new capabilities, including facial recognition, intrusion detection, license plate recognition, and much more.
However, security systems such as Spot AI that offer video analytics can be used for much more than preventing break-ins and theft. With the insights generated by cutting-edge video analytics platforms, leadership can also identify opportunities for improving workplace and school  safety along with pinpointing enlightening trends in customer, employee, or student activity. What happens when AI is applied to video from K-12 workplaces? There’s no doubt it’s already being considered. Check out these blog entries promoting it:
While Tik Tok may be one of the ways our self-created videos are being analyzed and processed, there’s no doubt these AI video analytics tools will find their way into K-12 education. And, most will welcome it with open arms.
