“The people who really made money on the California Gold Rush were merchants…During a gold rush, sell shovels” (source).
With that bit of trivia in mind, I had a laugh at this article from Preston Gralla, Copilot for Windows Lands with a Thud, from InfoWorld:
In the decades I’ve been writing about technology, I’ve never seen a something take off as fast as generative AI – or seen anything so hyped. The promises about how genAI will change our lives have come fast and furious. It will write the Great American Novel, compose symphonies, steal millions of jobs. It will do our work for us, help authoritarian regimes spread misinformation, and ultimately become an existential threat to humankind. The claims have been outrageous. But unlike many overhyped technologies, genAI has proven it can bring in significant revenue
Significant revenue. That’s what the AI revolution is about? Having seen how “AI can make us money” perspective firsthand, I question the “gold rush” mentality. If you’re thinking, “Would Miguel have been the guy to rush for gold?” the answer is, “Nope!” I might show up to sell some donuts or something (quite a money maker according to my reading of Louis L’Amour’s Comstock Lode and similar titles). So much for firsthand research…except, I’d pay for a donut!
This quote from the article resonated:
To a company with AI hopes, every problem it sees can be solved with AI…So be very suspicious of genAI promises. Expect the worst. Maybe then, sometimes, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
I regret that my experience with Windows 11 Copilot has been underwhelming. How do I uninstall it?
[looking for Linux Mint USB drive to use instead]
