A few weeks ago, I received an invitation to check out Newsmast. You can see the invitational email below:
We’re getting in touch to introduce a fediverse project we think you will be interested in: Newsmast. It’s a combined Mastodon server and app which is built around communities of interest. Communities like our Government & Policy community. All backed by a charitable foundation. We’re doing something new on social media: bringing together collective knowledge:
- Users can easily browse communities, exploring timelines which are a carefully curated mix of hashtags, filters and follows.
- Through the app, users can post to followers, the communities they are in, or any communities they choose, with relevant hashtags automatically added to their posts.
- We’re keeping it safe, screening out all NSFW content, hate speech and other content which breaches our guidelines, and moderating all communities.
Thanks to Mastodon, our communities are full of interesting and engaging content. In the For You timelines we’ve highlighted a handful of the top contributors in each community. People like you, who know their stuff, sharing insights. Check us out at newsmast.org. (Source: Newsmast invitational email)
In no time, I found myself signed up for this service.
Newsmast Essentials
A subsequent email highlights these features:
We’ve made it really easy to join communities that matter to you. Use the communities tab to explore all topics here on Newsmast. Join new communities at any time and see them in ‘My Communities’.Communities have two feeds to explore, the “All’ timeline where you’ll see posts from Newsmast and Mastodon. There’s also the ‘For You’ feed, unique to each community, with hand selected contributors taking centre stage. If you find a user who talks about all the things you love, follow them and see all of their posts in your ‘Following’ timeline.
Quick Takeaways
What do I think about Newsmast? I’m not sure it’s going to replace my use of Mastodon clients like Toot or other more GUI oriented apps. I’ve had a chance to see an offering from Flipboard, and like that one, Newsmast makes articles image rich. I’m comparing Newsmasts to Flipgrid, but a Flipgrid for Mastodon.
Hmm, I wonder – Mastodon Education App?
As I look at this, I realize I’ve picked up another Mastodon account. Newsmast is forgettable clone, but I sure wish we could make an app for Mastodon.Education that people could sign up with on iOS or Android, and auto-populates with lists of educators.
I’ll have to remember to suggest that tomorrow to Eric.
