#TCEA Presentation Update: Day 2 (Sun) #EduSky #EdTech

Woohoo, Day 2 is starting up. As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, I’ll be sharing all my presentations on the day I present them. Ok, maybe I didn’t say that exactly. Today, I have one presentation, but I have a spare preso as well.

Aside: We are asked to prepare our primary presentations, but then to come up with a spare as a just in case. After coming up with a handful of other presentations, I usually prep the backup at the end. Lots of fun working on this one, though, and I hope you enjoy it.

Ok, let’s take a look at those session resources!

Session #1: Digital Tools for Memory and Learning

Explore the science of retrieval practice, a powerful learning strategy. Learn to use digital quizzing tools, spaced repetition apps, and other digital tools and resources to implement effective retrieval practice in your classroom. Get Miguel’s Notes Organizer (Canva Template | PPT or PDF).

My favorite slide is this one, which includes the stages of learning image:

Session #2: Scaffolded Learning with Concept Mapping

Concept mapping (effect size: 0.66) is a powerful way for students to visually organize information and connect new learning with prior knowledge. This session will demonstrate how to use concept maps to scaffold learning across various subjects.

This session, even if a backup, was so much fun. I’ve had a love affair with note-taking and concept mapping FOREVER. I taught my kids how to make concept maps, and I used them a lot when in a note-taking situation, a la sketchnoting (but mine never look that good). I always wondered at how I was able to use a Deep Learning strategy at Surface Learning phase, and this presentation allowed me to explore it in more details.

I confess that I went a little crazy working on this presentation…so I have several favorite slides to share:

The BOOM Concept Map Model is a fun, tongue in cheek kinda model to use for creating concept maps. It does tie in all the research about Surface, Deep, Transfer Learning.

The slide that is my ABSOLUTE favorite is this one, that shows how Concept Maps can scaffold every level of the SOLO Taxonomy. I explore some examples in the presentation, but this is my favorite because it is mind-blowing way to see concept maps as useful at PreStructural through Extended Abstract.
