This is a piece I wrote after prepping a presentation that didn’t get shared at a recent Convention. You see, we prepare a list of presentations and submit them for review. Then, some get chosen, some don’t. This one intrigued me enough that I ended up cannibalizing it and blending into other presentations I made for the Convention.

What was really of interest to me was how the SOLO Taxonomy could be applied to understand concept maps as scaffolds.

You saw my handwritten scrawl in the concept map I made to explore the phases of learning. Here’s an AI version (using the amazing Napkin AI):

By the time you get to creating diagrams with AI, though, it’s clear that for long-term information retention for K-16 students, it’s better to make these by hand than with digital tools.

What are the implications of that for Ed Tech? That said, I still love to use these tools above for productivity, for teaching, but not so much for encouraging young learners to build critical thinking capacity except at the higher levels of the SOLO Taxonomy.
