With a motto of “See something, Tap something” this iOS only app is available:
ICEBlock is an innovative, completely anonymous crowdsourced platform that allows users to report Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity with just two taps on their phone. In recent years, ICE has faced criticism for alleged civil rights abuses and failures to adhere to constitutional principles and due process, making it crucial for communities to stay informed about its operations.
Modeled after Waze but for ICE sightings, the app ensures user privacy by storing no personal data, making it impossible to trace reports back to individual users. Available exclusively for iOS devices, ICEBlock empowers communities to stay informed about ICE presence within a 5-mile radius while maintaining their anonymity through real-time updates and automatic deletion of sightings after four hours.
Unfortunately, it’s not available for Android users for the reason that…
At ICEBlock, user privacy and security are paramount. Our application is designed to provide as much anonymity as possible without storing any user data or creating accounts. While we understand the desire for an Android version of ICEBlock, achieving this level of anonymity on Android is not feasible due to the inherent requirements of push notification services. You can find a write-up about it at the ICEBlock website above; here’s a short excerpt from one of the PDFs they share:
Joshua Aaron, ICEBlock’s Texas-based developer, called the administration’s recent criticism “another rightwing fearmongering scare tactic,” telling NBC News in a phone interview on Tuesday that his app was designed to be a resource for immigrants who are fearful they will get deported. He said he felt like he was “watching history repeat itself” when he saw things like “5-year-olds in courtrooms with no representation” and “college
students being disappeared for their political opinions.”
“When I saw what was happening in this country, I really just wanted to do something to help Xght back,” said Aaron, a onetime musician who spent several months working on the app. “I grew up in a Jewish household, and being part of the Jewish community, I had the chance to meet Holocaust survivors and learn the history of what happened in Nazi Germany, and the parallels that we can draw between what’s happening right now in our
country and Hitler’s rise to power are undeniable.”
That this is even needed in the United States of America is unbelievable, unless you take American history (the real stuff, not the revisionist ones as cited in Lies My Teacher Told Me) into account. I wonder how long this will be available. I remember another popular with the populace but not the Government from the past that was forced offline, Lavabit the secure email program.
