MyNotes: AI skills aren’t just for tech majors

Five takeaways from Ariel Gilreath article on June 19, 2025 in The Hechinger Report, a great publication you may want to subscribe to and read:

  • More Jobs Want AI Skills Everywhere: It’s not just tech jobs anymore; many different kinds of jobs now want people who know about AI. The number of job ads asking for generative AI skills shot up by 323 percent last year, going from under 16,000 to over 66,000. This comes from a report by Lightcast.
  • Workers are Learning to Work with AI: Even though 41 percent of over 1,000 big companies think AI might lead to fewer jobs in the next five years, most companies (77 percent) are planning to train their employees to work better with AI. This information is from the World Economic Forum’s January Future of Jobs report.
  • New Jobs are Most at Risk: Jobs for people just starting their careers might be taken over by AI. In March, almost 6 percent of recent college graduates couldn’t find jobs, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
  • Colleges are Quickly Adding AI Classes: Schools are moving fast to teach students about AI. For example, Miami Dade College started its AI certificate program in 2023, right after ChatGPT came out. They’ve even added associate and bachelor’s degrees in applied AI since then.
  • AI Makes Work More Productive: Companies are getting more done when they use AI tools. At a company called eMed, departments that use AI are about 20 to 30 percent more productive in their work.
