Finding a way that ensures students learn critical and computational thinking, coding with GenAI in the mix remains a challenge.

Employers continue to find the easy way forward, even when it means cutting opportunities for people to maximize profits. The way of the world but I can’t help but wonder if there be a whole other way. Are we really stuck with this?
in the last three years there’s been a 65% drop from companies seeking workers with two years of experience or less (according to an analysis by technology research/education organization CompTIA), with tech companies “relying more on AI for some aspects of coding, eliminating some entry-level work.”

The Steve Lohr article in The Star that Slashdot references shares:
…educators ponder what the tech jobs of the future will look like in an AI economy.
“We’re seeing the tip of the AI tsunami,” said Jeannette Wing, a computer science professor and executive vice president of research at Columbia University.
…many computer science students embracing the new AI tools [do so] with some reservations. They say they use AI for building initial prototype programs, for checking for errors in code and as a digital tutor to answer questions. But they are reluctant to rely on it too much, fearing it dulls their computing acumen.
Certainly, it’s not that big a stretch to see one possibility…
Since 2023, Turcios, 29, has attended more than 200 events, where he’s won cash, software credits, and clout…Instead of vigorously coding until the deadline, he finished his projects hours early by getting AI to do the technical work for him. “I didn’t write a single line of code,” Turcios said of his first hackathon where he prompted ChatGPT using plain English to generate a program that can convert any song into a lo-fi version…
“I realized that I could compete with people who have degrees and fancy jobs….”
Turcios is now known for being able to build anything quickly. Businesses reach out to him to contract out projects that would take software engineering teams weeks…. (Read more)
Are you vibe coding yet? You really can’t argue too much with results if businesses will pay for it. But does this work only for those who don’t care to learn the coding, instead developing different skills?
