Tisha Poncio observes in her blog, ironically on Substack (I cast no stones, I live in a glass house as well), The End of Tik Tok:
In a world where division is the “trend,” TikTok gave people a place to build community, to learn things we never could have learned in a typical classroom, and on-the-spot awareness of the people living in the world, too. It was the authenticity and vulnerability that the other platforms could not cultivate.
So last week, when TikTok was sold to US operations, I think we all knew what was happening.
But like so many other things, we did not expect it to become what it is now.

If you are like Tisha, looking for a new home not controlled by billionaires/trillionaires, take a hard look at the Fediverse.
Looking for an alternative to Tik Tok? Who wouldn’t be after new draconian, privacy busting policy update, broken video sharing according to opinions of users?
PeerTube offers an alternative for educators. Here are a few recommendations from Gemini:
- TILvids (Today I Learned Videos): One of the most popular instances for “edutainment” and instructional content. It has a high standard for quality and focuses on sharing knowledge rather than just entertainment.
- Edifice (peertube-na.edifice.io): A North American instance explicitly designed for educators. It’s a great place to connect with other instructors and find pedagogical content.
- HowlRound TV: Hosted in the US, this instance focuses on education and activism, primarily within the arts and humanities.
I applied for my TILvids account. I will use it as a replacement to YouTube. You can find me at mguhlin@zirk.us .
