Picture Indians

Original Prose and Text by students

This interesting tidbit regarding “Picture Indians” came my way today:

We have had the great stroke of luck to have one of the foremost nanotechnology minds in the US to be our advanced math teacher this year but also a multimedia teacher. Paul Mc Whorter is a top consultant for nanotechnology in the US, and founded Memx corporation. Raised in [district], he returned to our ISD to try and help our students understand what it takes to be an entrepreneur by giving his time and talent back to our community.

He had them create a site that will sell Google ads but the catch was that all the text had to be original and from the heart.

For example, if you click on Whispers link, you’ll see a variety of images of Native Americans. Click on them and you’ll see the “original prose” of students. This one caught my eye:

Lots of suggestions could be made for the tools used to create the site (blog/wiki instead of whatever was used, a digital story using PhotoStory/VoiceThread or the million other ways to include media…however, this is a start worthy of a response). I know I would have taken pride in MY students doing something like this, if not the exactly the same.

How would you have executed this project?

  1. We should not be amazed at what students will do if given authentic projects. This project illustrates the possibilities when we give students work that is real and engaging.
