Consider having your K-3 students participate in the Winter Wonderland project…
Students will create a winter picture using any available drawing program such as Microsoft Paint, KidPix, TuxPaint, Kerpoof. The pictures should be saved as JPGs for use in the video. Students will then be recorded singing a Winter themed song such as Jingle Bells or Winter Wonderland using an available tool such as Audacity or GarageBand. The exported pictures and recorded song will be combined by the teacher to create a Winter Song Video using available tools such as Animoto, iMovie, Movie Maker, MyPlick.com, One True Media, etc.
This online collaborative projects makes me ask, what other projects are out there that educators and students can participate in?
Life Round here is one that comes to mind….
For those of you who remember Life Round Here 2007 you may be excited to know that Life Round Here 2009 is now accepting participants!
What we really want students to do is, “Tell us, what’s it really like to live where you live”.
You can use any of a wide variety of tools to create the story, from Microsoft Photostory to iMovie to Voicethread to anything else you can think of.
The requirements are fairly much the same:
- It must involve students from 10 – 13 years old.
- Your class/school/group must be able to publish six stories.
- The stories must be in English or have subtitles in English.
- Stories must be published and “watchable” by March 31, 2009.
I would also appreciate it if you would consider spreading the word. The official tag for this year’s project is liferoundhere09.

Another Think Coming 
I’m coordinating a collaborative writing project, Write On, that needs one more participating class! Working together, ten groups of students will write and illustrate a story, hosted on the project wiki: http://writeonproject.pbwiki.com/. Additionally, there’s a wiki page for each class to share information about their state or region. Fourth graders in Plainville, CT spend much of the school year studying regions and biomes. The information shared by other classes will help them in their studies.Miguel, if you know of a teacher in your district who’d be interested in participating, please point them towards it. If anyone reading is interested, drop me a note at: farmera@plainvilleschools.org.I just finished putting together another collaborative wiki project that will start this spring with second graders at one of my schools, and then carry over into next year when they are third graders.
