At the risk of being real “curmudgeony,” I’m going to decline the 2009 Edublog Award nomination for Best Resource Sharing Blog. (and no one ever better suggest a lifetime award for me until I’m buried!).
Like a few others on the list–you know who you are–I find lists of exemplary blogs, voting for them, measuring their Technorati ranking a bit…well, counter-productive and repulsive. Those things are incidental to being a blogger, aren’t they? But I’ve grown more mellow in my “old blogging age.” People like to make lists, and do all that other stuff so…c’est la vie.
I appreciate those of you who sought to nominate Around the Corner-MGuhlin.org for the award (heck, any award) but I know the worth of my work and your daily comments and reading are affirmation enough. Since I’ve written why I blog many times before, I’m not going to go into detail again.
However, if the Edublog Award organizer persist in keeping a link to my blog, would you mind fixing my name? It’s mis-spelled as “MGulin” when it needs to be “MGuhlin.”
Thanks to all for your consideration!
That aside, here’s a list of the nominees…please drop by and give them a visit, subscribe….

I declined my nomination as well and the one they sent to add me to the list of nominated "best-of" anything. 😉

I read those lists and I think of how few of them I read. And I read a lot of blogs! But in the best individual blog catagory I read perhaps 8-9 of the 37 nominated. I suspect that is more than many though fewer than some. What sense does it make for me to vote for one (any one) of those nominations? None really. So these voting things become mostly a popularity contest with people voting for their favorite blog. Do we know that the blog we like is better than one of the blogs we've never read? Of course not. It reduces the value of the effort in my opinion. To be nominated is nice but it means just as much to me if someone says "hey I like your blog and get a lot of value from it."Which reminds me, I really like your blog and get a lot of value from it.

I like it Miguel. The real honour is the nomination, competition (while understandable from promotional side of the Edublogs business) kinda misses the spirit of this whole thing we're in.Much like you, 1 write for pleasure & if someone else out there finds it useful – fantastic.Have a great Christmas break, may see you at/via the iMoot in January?Tomaz

Hi Miguel,You are an hombre after my own heart"http://doug-johnson.squarespace.com/blue-skunk-blog/2008/12/1/on-ranking-awards-and-other-nonsense.htmlNot only was I made to feel like I have one foot in the grave with this lifetime thing, but the nomination of "the most influential post" from the Blue Skunk was a guest post! I've decided some wrong this are just best ignored. All the best,Doug

@Tomaz – iMoot? Yeah, right!! I wish I could attend but no disposable cash in my budget at the moment.

A while back my class blog was nominated and in the final five for NZ blogging award. We didn't get anywhere and I was gutted. Would have been better never to have been nominated in the first place. Now feel like you- would rather not rank a blog by how many Twitter followers you might have or how big a school you work in.Have learnt my lesson- the hard way.Allanah K

It does seem a bit curmudgeonly ;O) but a point worth making. It is hardly surprising that this kind of thing would appeal to teachers, who spend a large percentage of their lives assessing the 'value' or 'worth' of others' work – and rewarding it!Basically, I agree with Tomaz and like the interaction the nominating process presents. It made feel good to nominate and be nominated!Probably the best thing about the Edublog Awards is that people can see a long list of blogs they may wish to subscribe and fnd some new folks to follow on twitter. This is pretty useful.BTW, ironically, or oddly enough, the Edublog Awards have led me too your blog again which I need to visit more often ;O)Have a great Silly Season, Miguel!

Well, for the 4th year in a row, I was not nominated, so I couldnt decline. However, I did decline the "Sexiest Man Alive 2009" nomination from People Magazine. Actually, I applaud that stand. Gracias Miguel, well played.TBH

Don't be so cranky, Miguel. =)The Eddies have lots of holes. So what? It's all essentially harmless (unlike my blog rankings which are coming out soon!). Some good stuff gets recognized, some good stuff doesn't. Some stuff gets recognized that you don't like, other stuff gets ignored that's much better. I like seeing what others nominate 'cause I always find new blogs that I didn't know about. Hey, maybe we should have a blog playoff. Head-to-head voting competition. I can see it now. Will Richardson v. David Warlick in one semifinal, Vicki Davis v. Stephen Downes in the other. Winner-take-all blog death match!I'm going to nominate you for a Lifetime Achievement every year. Revenge for making me wear that sombrero when I came to San Antonio…C'est la vie exactly.

LOL Scott! I've been campaigning for the Eddies to add an admin focused blog just for the likes of you, Doug, Miguel, others…And Miguel, I swear I had to read twice. I dd not pay attention to the heading and scrolled past it to begin reading. I thought after the first read it was a Blue Skunk writing!! LOL. Don't be so shy. I tell newbies all the time this is a good pace to "start" an rss reader, and then grow from there. Each year I put the ones Im not familiar with in an Eddies folder for consideration. As they pique my interest they get refiled in their right location in my reader. As I decide they dont appeal toe, I cut them away. It feels good to weed them out of my reader. Glad you have stayed and made the cut each year in my reader.

By the way, it must be easier to decline the nomination when your readership is in the triple digits eh? For those of us that are lucky to break ten hits on the day of a new post, a nomination just gives us a warm fuzzy feeling that someone went out of their way to say something nice about us. I would have left a comment but I ran out of time looking up the definition for curmudgeony 😉
