First Grade Media Literacy

This question came from Sheryl Lew via my Facebook page (brackets indicate my spelling correction):

“Miguel, do you have any ideas for first grade media literacy? TEK16A recognize different purposes of media (inform, entertain etc)., TEK16B identify [techniques] used in media (sound, movement etc.)”

The short answer is, not at the moment. That said, upon 3 second reflection required for a blog entry (grin), I can see the following possibilities:

Podcasting
Using a blog and audio recording, first grade students could do something similar to these classrooms:

I discovered these podcasts via a quick Google search…keywords “first grade podcasts”

What First Grade uses of media could you suggest for Sheryl?

  1. VoiceThread is another great option for first graders. We've used pictures of us learning about something (shapes, states of water, past/present, etc.) and then record what we learned.

  3. I would definitely recommend VoiceThread for first graders. Students in my district have used it to talk about reader-text connections, do book reviews, and share facts on various science topics. Also, students can create simple narrated videos on various topics using digital cameras and multimedia software. For example, when studying shapes students could use digital cameras to take picture of various shapes – Fisher Price cameras are great for little hands. With assistance they can insert the pics into a class movie (iMovie for Mac, ? for PC) or slideshow. Then, students can add their voices to tell about the pictures and shapes. (ex: The door is a rectangle.) Save or export to movie format, and perhaps even post on TeacherTube or YouTube.
