Into the Guts of GoogleApps for Education Implementation

Implementing anything takes time, effort, persistence and patience. That’s why Prince George Schools effort at documenting their transition to GoogleApps for Education is so valuable to districts that follow in their footsteps.

This morning, after attending a breakfast hosted by Promethean ActivBoards–my district has purchased an interactive whiteboard for every math and science classroom, so meeting with the vendor was warranted (and breakfast wasn’t bad either)–I had the chance to chat with Karen from Spring Branch ISD, responsible for GoogleApps for Education transition. Deployment of GoogleApps for Education to 32,000 students, 2200 teachers.

This podcast focuses on some of the challenges that are making Spring Branch ISD think hard, including formatting of documents–and how that is different from MS Office. Another, more important concern is the difference between teacher accounts being on one domain, as opposed to students being on another and how that affect Google Forms.

These are the nitty-gritty details of implementation and fascinating to listen to. I only wish I’d had time with Karen to explore these details and others as well! Karen was a great sport and I am grateful to her–and Sherry Alford–for their transparency. The more they share, the better it is for other public school districts who have to work through these issues.

Aside: I apologize for the background noise…the Promethean meeting was just finishing up and you can hear them all in the background. I also had to cut Karen’s response to my FERPA question. I hope to do a follow-up with Karen so we can hear how Spring Branch ISD handled this!

Does the experience of implementing GoogleApps for Education–and getting support–live up to the hype? Let’s find out….
