Not Yet, Flickr!

Yesterday evening, I found myself pondering whether I should keep paying $20 a year for Flickr. Sure, it’s not a LOT of money but I also pay for extra storage for Picasa and have–when I last checked–90 gigs of space (when did that happen? wow). So, plenty of room to use for Google PicasaWeb, dropping tons of critical, non-confidential documents, etc.

Flickr, however, has one thing going for it that PicasaWeb doesn’t according to commenters:

If your photos there are CC-licensed, the sharing benefits for others might be one good reason to leave your stuff there. As of last week, Flickr had over 134 million open-licensed photos, making it a rich resource for remixers.

and

If you don’t care for using your Flickr account as your image portfolio, then I suppose it wouldn’t make much difference for you if you nuked it. If you have CC-licensed photos in there, though, like Karen said, that could be passing up the chance to promote yourself through your images, as well as depriving some innocent blogger of your generously shared photos. So… your choice 🙂

All this raises the question, do I have 200 images that FlickrCC friendly? Couldn’t I just remove all my other images–the private sets–and leave the rest? The answer is probably could, but I’d have to re-subscribe to Flickr for another year to get access to all my images so I could weed out the non-public stuff.

So, Flickr remains for now and over this next year, I’ll be removing all my personal images and sets that are private and leaving only those which are public. Ok, you’ve been warned!

  1. Miguel,I double dip between Flickr and Picasa Web as well. Ultimately, I did find the same balance you discovered with respect to how each service is used. I post all my edu-tech, non-personal photos to Flickr and Picasa but I only post personal pictures (family, friends, etc.) to Picasa.Great minds think alike! 😉
