Texas’ top elected leaders have told state agencies, appellate courts, and universities to cut their proposed budgets by 3%.
The cuts would apply to the next two-year budget cycle. Gov. Greg Abbott, House Speaker Dustin Burrows, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick say the goal is to limit spending and make room for priorities such as property tax relief.
K-12 public education is exempt. The new private school voucher program is also exempt. Required social programs, pension costs, and employee benefits are protected as well.
