Update: Jing Pro end of life announced. SnagIt is the new replacement. Read about it here.
For some time now, although not as long as others, I have been advocating the use of Jing Pro ($15). It’s a delightful tool that has made short work of the tutorial videos needed for ed-tech professional learning.
One of the challenges for those using Jing–not the Pro version that saves as both SWF and MP4–has been converting the SWF file generated by Jing to something editable. In fact, this was my chief objection against using Jing…the SWF format was impossible to convert. And, there was no place to host it except the Jing hosting web site.
The solution in the past was pay $15 and get the Pro version. Now, another solution (Windows only, no Mac or GNU/Linux solution exists that I know of and I’ve looked hard, unfortunately) exists. I found out about it thanks to Dr. Richard Smith. He wrote:
I saw your Jing recommendation on your blog (I teach Jing in my Interactive Distance Learning course) but I didn’t see this tip on how to easily convert Jing swf files to nice YouTube friendly mpeg files for free. If you haven’t already found “Moyea swf to mpeg converter” go to, http://www.moyeasoft.com/
…The free version puts a tiny logo in the upper left corner of the video. It is not objectionable at all. If this info isn’t on your blog already, your readers will probably really like to know about it.

Windows users should be aware of another free tool in Windows Media Encoder http://my.eustaceisd.net/ngnkb . WME is admittedly getting long in the tooth, somewhat superceded by the less free Expression Silverlight Encoder (which I have yet to try); and while the learning curve is higher than Jing it will perform a number of functions centered around the WMV format such as screen capture, conversion, live streaming (including desktop or camera/device inputs) and more. Simple clipping is also there but Movie Maker is a natural for editing the output of WME and in turn WME is good for post-processing MM projects for optimized streaming. Any of Miguel's readers are welcome to tweet me for more info or tips about WME.

@Anonymous I agree with your assessment. It's not as unobtrusive as anyone would like. That's why it's better to record to MP4 or some other "editable" format rather than SWF.

@skip,I know it's not ideal, but Quicktime 10 in Snow Leopard has a screen-record option. Fire it up, start the recording, then full-screen the Jing swf and play it with volume loud.Once done, go to Edit>Trim to take off the few seconds before you full-screened the Jing, and the few seconds at the end when you stopped the screen-recorder. Hit "trim" and voila: you have a .mov version. You can export from QT to other formats from there, too.Imperfect, but workable.(Hi Miguel :)Clay
