In response to this post, I received this one from Senator Hutchinson:
Dear Mr. Guhlin:
Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns about federal funding of education programs. I welcome your thoughts and comments on this issue.
Education is one of the foundations of America’s strength and prosperity. As Congress continues to control federal spending, I will work to ensure adequate federal funding of programs that support local education to make certain our children receive the best education possible. I will also continue to work hard to reduce the tax burden on American families to let them keep more of their own money and use it to make their own education choices, rather than have the federal government decide what is best for them.
I appreciate hearing from you and hope you will not hesitate to keep in touch on any issue of concern to you.
Sincerely,
Kay Bailey Hutchison
United States Senator
The best kind of letter writing or written response is the one that is so smooth that it has no handholds for response, no way for the reader to respond in a way that builds on what the original author wrote. It is the perfect administrator’s response where writing is like a smooth, impenetrable monolith of words that is imposing, appears to answer the original query but in reality represents no change in the status quo.
I find this response from Kay Bailey Hutchison to be that kind of response. The phrases that bother me are in bold in her letter…they are vague, undefined and promise the world without granting nothing.
Come on, Kay Bailey Hutchison. Would it have taken so much time to be MORE specific?
