Retrieval practice is such a key skill but to really take advantage of it, you have to make sure you have a clear understanding of what “learning” means. Consider Geoff Petty’s definition from his book, Evidence Based Teaching:
“…an active process of making sense that creates a personal interpretation of what has been learned, rather than a perfect representation of what was taught.”
I love this definition because it underscores key ideas that we need to keep in mind about learning:
- Active
- Personal
And, it’s NOT a perfect representation or copy of what was taught. So often as teachers, we spend so much time getting info into students (about 94% of learning is Surface Learning focused).
For fun, I asked folks in my session to share what they are actually doing for Retrieval Practice, but to categorize it according to the SOLO Taxonomy:
